Content migration and feature development for the Hinge marketing site.
Hinge needed a better system for managing content on their marketing site. Sanctuary Computer re-platformed their CMS, creating a streamlined, straightforward backend.
We interviewed various Hinge content managers to learn about the pain points they experienced on their old CMS, and discuss ambitions for a best-case content management system.
Using Sanity, we created a CMS designed to maximize editors’ efficiency and capabilities, and built in localization to support Hinge’s international growth.
We rolled out a suite of new features and content blocks to further expand editors’ creative freedom.
Using their old backend, the Hinge team had run up against a wall of content management possibilities. They needed a system where non-technical team members are able to autonomously update content without the IT team’s involvement.
As technical partners, we also resolved a cookie consent issue that had forced Hinge to disable Google Analytics on their website for months, and restored their team’s ability to run third-party scripts and pixels in compliance with cookie law.
Using Sanity, we internationalized their website so the Hinge team could better serve a growing global audience as they expand to new markets.
Using their old system, an editor would have to make a separate page for each language, making content updates a real pain in the neck.
Now, content editors can compose a parent page in English, and then create instances of that page in fifteen different languages — and just about as many clicks. As their business grows to new markets, they’re able to add new languages as needed.
Users can choose to browse content in a specific language on any page using the localization toggle in the footer, designed by our in-house designers.
Image optimization for improved page load times
Using the image optimization features of Next.js and Sanity, we identified opportunities to make the Hinge site load faster while reducing costs. By optimizing with responsive images and serving assets from a new CDN, we lowered page bandwidth by an average of 44% per page, reduced monthly hosting costs by 82%, and improved page performance metrics. This has the added benefit of improving search engine optimization.
Since Hinge wanted to keep the site basically the same, we made the best use of our time under the hood, drying up duplicated code, and making existing code more efficient.
During development, we identified opportunities to make the site more accessible in accordance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards. We audited the site to ensure that all parts of every page can be browsed using only a screen reader or a keyboard.
We also added Typescript, building a level of safety to our code to ensure each that component knows the data it’s being fed and is set up to only receive that data.
After migration was complete, we collaborated with our design team to introduce new features to their blogs, including tagging, social media embeds, and other content blocks to further expand editors’ creative freedom.
Tell your old CMS it’s not you, it’s me. Maybe you can still be friends.
